Searching Cells

Occasionally, we may need to search cells for values within those cells. For example, what if we want to identify all of our partners who are in part time jobs? Let’s assume, for this example, that all partners in a part time role have the identifier “P/T” somewhere in their job title. To do search the cells for “P/T”, we would simply use this formula:

=IF(ISNUMBER(SEARCH("P/T",A2)),"Part-Time", "Full-Time")

This formula will search cell A2 for the phrase “P/T”, if the cell has “P/T” in it anywhere, “Part-Time” will be the result, if not “Full-Time” will be the result.  There are other ways to do this, like filtering using “containing”, but this is the formulaic approach and is far more dynamic.
